Not long ago, communities built electricity systems to support economic growth.
Today, that relationship is changing.
Increasingly, the availability of reliable electricity is determining where businesses invest, where industries grow and where communities thrive. As Alberta's electricity demand continues to rise, having enough dependable power will be critical to supporting the province's long-term prosperity.
According to Mike Law, Head of Power System Integration at Energy Alberta, the Peace River Nuclear Power Project is about much more than generating electricity - it's about building the infrastructure needed to support Alberta's future.
Meeting Alberta's Growing Electricity Needs
"Nuclear energy provides a very safe, reliable and affordable replacement capacity while supplying the electricity Alberta will need as demand continues to grow," said Law.
Alberta's electricity needs are expected to increase significantly over the coming years as the province grows and industries become more electrified.
Emerging sectors like artificial intelligence (AI), data centres and advanced manufacturing require large amounts of reliable electricity around the clock. At the same time, some existing electricity generation infrastructure will retire over the coming decades, creating a need for new sources of dependable power.
The Peace River Nuclear Power Project is designed to help meet that growing demand by providing reliable, stable electricity – clean power that is available 24 hours a day, regardless of weather conditions.
Stable Electricity for Generations
Nuclear power plants are among the longest-lasting infrastructure investments in the world, with operating lives of up to 80 years.
That longevity provides more than reliable electricity - it also offers long-term, predictable electricity costs.
Unlike shorter-lived generating facilities that require more frequent replacement and can be subject to fluctuating commodity prices nuclear power can continue producing electricity for generations, helping provide greater certainty for consumers and businesses alike.
Strengthening Alberta's Electricity System
The Peace River Nuclear Power Project would connect to Alberta's existing electricity grid through new transmission infrastructure and operate alongside the province's competitive electricity market.
Its consistent electricity production would complement renewable energy sources by providing dependable generation when wind and solar output varies.
The Project's location in northwestern Alberta also creates opportunities to strengthen electricity connections with British Columbia, increasing flexibility across the western Canadian electricity system while supporting Alberta's growing renewable energy mix.
A Project with Benefits Beyond Alberta
While the Peace River Nuclear Power Project is first and foremost designed to meet Alberta's electricity needs, its benefits have potential to extend beyond provincial borders.
Additional electricity capacity and stronger transmission connections could improve regional energy reliability while supporting economic growth throughout Western Canada and help electrify industries such as mining and LNG.
The Project also builds on Canada's globally recognized nuclear expertise and domestic supply chain. Prioritizing Canadian participation, Canadian ownership and Canadian economic value, it represents an opportunity to strengthen the country's long-term energy security while creating skilled jobs and economic opportunities here at home.
Building the Infrastructure That Powers Tomorrow
Reliable electricity has become one of the most important foundations of a modern economy.
The Peace River Nuclear Power Project represents an opportunity to help Alberta meet growing electricity demand, strengthen the province's power system and create the conditions needed for long-term economic growth.
Because the future won't simply be built with electricity - it will be built where electricity is available.
