August 19, 2025
At Energy Alberta’s request, the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada (IAAC) has suspended the timeline for the Planning Phase of the Peace River Nuclear Power Project Impact Assessment process for a period of three to six months.
Effective August 20, 2025, the suspension is in response to requests by some Indigenous Nations and Communities for a pause to allow them additional time to more fully and meaningfully participate in the regulatory process and increase community awareness and education related to the nuclear energy sector.
During the regulatory suspension period, Energy Alberta will continue engaging with Indigenous Nations and Communities, local governments, landowners and the public to better understand their interests and concerns around the Project and how we can reflect those in our planning. Our Project Team will continue moving ahead with key planning work including:
• 2025 Summer Fieldwork Program to accommodate those Nations and Communities who have already indicated an interest in participating;
• Water Intake Siting Inspection, which is important to the provincial water licencing process;
• Involvement of Nations and communities, in the planning and preparations for future environmental and socio-economic studies;
• Workshops and public information sessions planned for Fall 2025; and
• An ongoing review and refinement of technology consistent with our goal of building a world class, zero-emission nuclear facility.
