On May 8, 2026, the government of Canada announced the launch of a discussion paper to engage Canadians on proposed reforms aimed at creating a simpler, more coordinated process for major projects including reducing duplication between regulators, improving coordination between federal and provincial reviews and completing federal decisions within shorter timelines. The goal is to make it clear that major projects can be built efficiently in Canada, while maintaining strong environmental protections and respecting the rights of Indigenous Peoples.
What is Being Proposed for Nuclear Projects?
One of the proposed changes would affect how nuclear and uranium projects, including the Peace River Nuclear Power Project, are reviewed. Instead of the current process involving both the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada (IAAC) and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), the government is proposing that CNSC would lead the Impact Assessment process as the federal regulator with the most expertise.
What This Means for the Peace River Nuclear Power Project
