Canada is entering an energy moment unlike anything in our lifetime - and Alberta is right at the centre of it.
A new study commissioned by the Canadian Nuclear Association shows that by 2050,Canada’s electricity demand could double or even triple, driven by population growth, electrification, new industries and the rising needs of digital technologies like artificial intelligence.
Meeting that demand will require one of the largest clean energy build-outs in our country’s history.
This isn’t a distant challenge. By 2035 - just a decade from now - Canada will need up to 36 gigawatts of new electricity capacity. Even if all existing fossil fuel generation stays online, we still face a shortfall of26 to 32 gigawatts. With major energy projects taking years to plan and build, action today is essential.
That’s where clean, green nuclear power comes in.
Nuclear energy is uniquely equipped to meet Canada’s future energy needs. It provides 24/7 emissions-free electricity, uses far less land than other clean technologies and offers some of the strongest economic returns for both ratepayers and taxpayers. Unlike intermittent sources, nuclear generates the dependable baseload power required to electrify transportation, heat homes, support booming populations, run data centres and attract new industry.
This is exactly why projects like the proposed Peace RiverNuclear Power Project matter so much.
Alberta is a growing province - and growth needs big, reliable power. The Peace River Nuclear Power Project represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to deliver clean, stable electricity for decades, while creating a new energy industry, unlocking thousands of good jobs and strengthening long-term energy independence in the West.
Canada has expanded its electricity system before, and we can do it again. But success requires bold action now.
Clean, reliable nuclear power will be at the heart of building the energy system our future demands - and Alberta is ready to lead.
